The “Caramel Biscuit” – A True American Original!

Creamy caramel wrapped around a traditional marshmallow; this delicious confection was first made in 1883 in Kentucky. A true an American original! The Modjeska was originally called a “caramel biscuit” – so how’d it get the name Modjeska?

Modjeska… What’s in a Name?

In the 1800s, renowned Polish actress Madame Helena Modjeska thrilled Kentucky audiences with her performance in the debut of Ibsen’s play, “The Doll’s House.” So impressed was a confectioner in the audience, he named his caramel biscuit the “Modjeska” in her honor. These are the caramels he made. 4 oz in a heat-sealed bag with the history on the label.

Modjeska's

When I was growing up my dad, mom and I would go to the HUGE Woolworth's store in downtown Denver. It filled up a whole city walk, side to side and front to back and it was two floors. Their candy counter which was really a candy department, had these treasures. The were called carmellows. The candy ladies wore white dresses and aprons and they actually waited on you. The had every candy you could ever want and also mixed fancy nuts (no peanuts) that were on a tray that revolved. It also kept the nuts warm. The warm nuts were a perfect accompaniment to the caramellows. Later I found modjeska's which are the same thing. They taste the same and are wrapped the same! It brought me back to the little girl and her parents at the candy counter. Thanks for keeping this tasty candy going 💝.
