The History of Licorice
The licorice plant, with its flavorful root, arrived in North America in the 1600s. It was enjoyed as a spice, tea, used medicinally… and even used for dental hygiene as an early toothbrush!
Licorice flavors took off in the late 1800s and early 1900s – allsorts, Black Jack gum, bridge mix, and the oldest American candy brand, Good N’ Plenty! The first flavored licorice, Raspberry Vines, were made in 1920. But it wasn’t popular until 1950!
The famous silent film star Charlie Chaplin needed an edible boot for his movie “The Gold Rush” in 1925. So, he called the American Licorice Company, makers of Red Vines and asked for a licorice boot. The company made him a licorice boot with string licorice laces which he ate like spaghetti.
