A great gift all year round! Sugar plums go back to the late 1500s where they were a much-esteemed confection and a digestive and breath freshener after a large meal. Each piece took weeks to make by highly skilled craftsmen who rolled a seed or nut in sugar in a balancing pan over a fire, let it dry for a few days, and rolled it again. Since only the wealthy could afford them, the sugar plums were associated with wealth and class. As for the name: “plum” does not refer to the fruit but to something that’s good. Sugar plums later made the leap to penny candy in the form of the jawbreakers at the turn of the century. They then evolved into spicy cinnamon Fireballs in the 1950s. 

This collection contains anise, fennel, and almond sugar plums. Enjoy as a treat, on top of ice cream or other dessert, or for midday refreshment. Comes in a 4 oz bag with the history on the label.
