The gummy candy started with the bears, made in Germany in 1921. They were named for the dancing bears of the previous century, much admired by the inventor. The base of the candy was 10th century Turkish Delight, used to ease sore throats. Countless other candies evolved from the Turkish delight: gummy worms, gum drops, Swedish Fish, and the substantive Gummy Sharks.  Comes in a 6-oz recyclable heat-sealed bag with the history on the label.
