A Bit of History

Among the many medicines of old, were the boiled sugars, containing horehound, lemon, ginger and other ingredients we now mainly consider flavorings. In the mid-1800s with the rise of the tasty and inexpensive candies, medicines found a new life as drops. Early on, ginger was used by sailors, who first brought them to North America  to treat sea sickness. Physicians, mid-wives and medicine-makers in the apothecaries, as well as women at home, prescribed them to treat a variety of ailments. Later, they found a home in penny candy stores, grocery stores, and grandmothers’ purses.
